From this Sunday, you can recycle your old trainers at any of Runners Need’s 34 stores, and to celebrate the launch, throughout the whole of October anyone who does bring in an old pair of trainers will be rewarded with £20 off a new pair.
The campaign coincides with the retailer’s sponsorship of the Royal Parks Half Marathon in Hyde Park, which has a sustainability angle with medals made from wood and new for this year – special bins for recycling banana skins.
Donated trainers will be collected by the European Recycling Company. The ERC, part of the SOEX Group, allowing them to be recycled or reused – providing footwear to those who could not otherwise afford them.
ERC CEO Andy Haws said: “We are delighted to be working with Runners Need on this exciting initiative. Recycling your running shoes and trainers is a big step towards minimising the impact that shoe waste has on the environment, and together Runners Need and ERC are working to do just that.”
