Lowe Alpine Altus 42:47 – Gear Review

Lowe Alpine Altus 42:47

I’ve found the middle-sized version of the all-mountain Altus ideal for lightweight overnights, hut-to-hut stuff and just general mountain walking. The artfully contoured back system means the optimally-cushioned lumbar pad, hip-belt and back system sort of flow together into a shape that nestles perfectly into your hips and lower back and gives a superb carry even with moderately heavy loads – the larger version has stiffer foam. The rest of the pack is beautifully-designed, has every feature you can think of from pockets to panel entry and has a reassuringly solid feel. It also manages to handle smaller, lighter day-loads without looking like a misshapen, shrivelled shadow of its fully-packed self. Everything about it is finished and fit for purpose and it’s really very hard to fault. Just about the only thing it won’t handle is full-on mountaineering use. The biz.

Superbly capable, state-of-the-art mountain all-rounder with excellent carry and features.
