Force Ten GR 45:10

F10 is Vango’s more technical sub-brand, best known for hard-core mountain tents, it also gives its name to a small range of packs including the GR 45:10, designed for overnighters and hut-to-hut alpine trekking missions. It’s a light, lean pack that feels slightly spartan in comparison to the Deuter or even the Berghaus pack with firmer, though not uncomfortable padding. It’s also slightly smaller for its nominal capacity despite the 10-litre overload. Once length is adjusted to fit, it has a reassuringly stable feel and carry, ideal for mountain ridge teetering. Stuff pockets are supplied, but I missed having hip ones. Also there’s no suspension clip for a hydration pack, which was irksome. On the plus side, zip panel access to the main body allows fast retrieval of badly-packed necessities. There’s a rain cover too along with mean black looks.

No-nonsense pack with mountain-friendly, firm, slightly spartan carry
