Altra Superior 4.0
With the Lone Peak, Timp and Olympus all featuring more cushioning, the Superior is the choice for Altra fans looking for a racy trail shoe. At around 300g for my UK11, the Superior is light enough to run long ultras and there’s plenty of comfort features designed for that purpose. The Quantic midsole is soft, for long run comfort while maintaining a touch of springiness. The heel counter is nicely padded but much improved from the ‘skater shoe’ heel of the earlier versions. This trimmed down heel and lacing design allows for a locked down mid-foot; essential as the forefoot is wide. Although ‘width’ is oversimplifying the design; it’s only a few millimetres wider than typical shoes across the ball joints, but the toe-box flares out allowing for a strong toe-off. The zero drop profile helps with descending as your heel is low to the ground and they encourage a fast turn-over with shorter, knee-friendly strides.
An excellent all-rounder with good grip over fairly dry trails. For feet that feel ‘free’.
